nonviolence www.kathykellytour.org

Cairns Peace by Peace is pleased to announce that internationally acclaimed peace activist Kathy Kelly will be our guest in Cairns between 20 and 23 October. Kathy Kelly is based in Chicago USA where she is a director of Voices for Creative Nonviolence. http://vcnv.org/ Kathy is often, and has been recently, in Afghanistan where she works with Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers whose central demand is an end to war in their country, and withdrawal of foreign troops. Kathy has been involved with direct humanitarian interventions into the contemporary war-zones of Afghanistan, Iraq and Gaza. She has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize and has been awarded more than 30 prizes and awards for her outstanding peace work. http://vcnv.org/kathy-kelly-long-version

Kathy Kelly will give a public talk at the reception rooms of Cairns Regional Council at 6.30 pm on Thursday 20 October, entitled “The cost of war: The price of peace”. Dr Hakim, a medical doctor working in Afghanistan, will accompany Ms Kelly. Mayor Val Schier is supporting the event with a contribution from her discretionary fund, and has indicated she’ll attend the event.

Master of Ceremonies is Mr Gavin King, former News Ltd journalist and currently LNP candidate for Cairns in the next Queensland election.

Peace by Peace spokeswoman Marci Gryffyn-Spicer said today “Peace as an issue is far too important for partisan politics to get in the way. Both Val Schier and Gavin King are personally committed to peace. 63% of Australians want an immediate withdrawal of our troops from Afghanistan. Kathy Kelly is an outstanding example of what ordinary citizens can achieve, and the people of Cairns can hear her eye-witness testimony about what is happening right now in Afghanistan and the USA.”

It’s time to end this war, and there’ll be an opportunity to discuss how we achieve that goal after Ms Kelly’s speech.

Entry is by donation to defray Ms Kelly travel costs.
